In 2019, the University and The Challenge Academy Trust (TCAT) in Warrington, Cheshire, launched a programme called Oxplore-Raising Attainment in Schools (RAIS), aimed at raising attainment and widening participation in higher education in the North West of England.
Together we formed a unique approach to improving attainment, differing from other interventions that typically focus on subject-specific support during Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5. In the first instance the partnership begins to work with teachers and learners from the age of 10. The prioritisation of teacher continuous professional development was an important part of the overall project structure, in turn ensuring those delivering to learners were able to understand the attainment pipeline and minimise longstanding leaks within that. For learners, ensuring that the partnership engaged with more than those labelled as 'more able' was of high priority. A learner’s previous performance was not and should never be the barrier to their future potential ability.
Oxplore Teach takes much of the learning and understanding of this initiative and aims to deliver it in a concise and accessible format for you to try within your school.
